What are typical spreads?

The market spread refers to the gap between the bid on the buy side of the price and the ask on the sell side. Market forces causing changes to the level of volatility and trading volumes can have an immediate impact on the width of the market spread.

Our market spreads are published as typical market spreads during the major trading sessions. Please note that out of hours and in periods of high volatility, our spreads may change.

What is a minimum price move?

Minimum price movement is the smallest calibration for a market's price change.

What is swap free trading?

Swap free trading is when traders are not charged for or earn interest on any of their trades. For some traders this is a religious choice.

What is trade value?

Trade value is the initial full value of your trading position, including the leveraged or borrowed portion of the funds. This value often refers to the number of contracts, lots or shares multiplied by the opening price of the trade.

The market (sometimes referred to as marked to market) value of a trade refers to the position multiplied by the prevailing market price.

What is notional value?

Many of our trading products are based on leverage. The notional value of a trading position is the total initial value including the leveraged, or borrowed portion.

What is leverage?

When trading a leveraged financial product, you have agreed to borrow funds with a view to multiply the total value of your trading position. This will magnify both the profits and the losses of any subsequent price changes.

Our trading products are displayed as ratios. As an example, some CFDs (Contracts for Difference) on equity products are shown with Leverage of 1:5 - This means for every 5 USD of trade value, we will move 1 USD onto the margin value of your trading account.

What is floating margin?

Some of the financial markets you trade may apply margin at a fixed rate. In this case the percentage required to open a trade stays the same regardless of the size of the position.

Other markets have margin steps, or floating margin levels that increase when you open a larger position or increase the size of your position thereafter.

What are pips?

This is short for “percentage in point”. Pips are used to measure the change in value between two currencies.

What are limit orders?

Limit orders can be pre-set to automatically close your position, close part of your position or to open a new trade at a level that suits your strategy.

Profit taking is a common use of a limit order. A trader can execute an opening buy trade and set an automatic take profit order to sell when market prices reach his/her required level. Of course, traders must also remember to factor in adverse price movements. Stop loss orders can be useful when managing risk.

What is a stop loss?

A stop loss order is linked to an open position. The stop loss order will trigger a closeout instruction when the traders pre-set level is hit.

Stop loss orders can be useful for managing trading risks and should be carefully aligned with available trading capital, risk appetite and market volatility. Please note that stop loss execution levels are not guaranteed.

How do I place stop-loss orders?

When your trade window opens in MetaTrader, you can set up a stop loss amount for your trade. If that is reached, your trade will automatically close thus protecting you from any unexpected losses. You can also drag your stop loss order directly on the MetaTrader charts – this is the preferred method of many traders as it helps to visualise the order.
